Here’s what it was like:  you take off into a lite breeze and fly through the devil that wasn’t there when you started.  Climb out, turn back and release in the devil, where a quick thousand foot gain lifts you into the shearline – right over the airport.  Tiptoe along that about eight miles each way, gaining a thousand feet with each pass.  It worked this way all day – and at the end turned to wave, also right over the airport.
