SOARING FORECAST MAY 3-6, 2013

UPDATE: SUNDAY WE WILL HAVE STRONG WAVE ALOFT. PRE-FRONTAL WINDS OUT OF THE SOUTH FORECAST 40 KNOTS AT 10,0000 FEET.

LAST WEEK

LAST WEEKEND WAS AWESOME! The lift showed up and was better than forecast. Ground temps were unseasonably high into the mid nineties. Pilots were regularly releasing the towplane after towing only 1,000 feet above the field. Harry Weunstall and another pilot did an easy 400k out and return. We had an aircraft return to the field on Saturday at 6:30 pm (student and instructor) and reported boomer lift of 1,000 FPM continuing at that late hour. …Hoping this is a good sign of an exceptional summer.
THIS WEEK

Another Excellent weekend on tap.
Hot dry offshore conditions this week will wrap up with Saturday marking the end of the Northerly flow and the return of our favorite buoyant Westerlies. We will have good lift Friday and even better lift Saturday with wide areas across the Antelope Valley producing good thermals for excellent cross-country conditions!
Dr. Jacks forecast for Saturday indicates we’ll have 600 to 800 FPM of lift at the field to above 15,000 feet.
The weather will do a 180 by Sunday-Monday with temps 15 degrees lower. We will still have quite good soaring but look for shear line soaring to return as the marine layer pushes the air aloft each day.

Sunday and Monday will be better! The winds may pick up and play havoc with thermals in the late afternoon but it will be the best weekend of the year so far.

SOARING FORECAST APRIL 12-15, 2013

LAST WEEK
Spring conditions allowed pilots to stay aloft locally for several hours working lift in small thermals. The winds aloft limited most folks from getting high due to its negative effect on thermals ability to consolidate.

Heard through the grapevine – -last weekend Dennis Tito and Jim Payne had a flight of 1500 kilometers! in the Sierra wave created by the unusual weather system.

Last Monday we halted operations due to strong surface winds. We had steady NW winds of 30 knots with gusts to 40+ at the field. The winds and temps aloft forecast for 18,000 feet was 109 knots. That’s an unusually low altitude for winds of that velocity.

THIS WEEK

Nice warm sunny weather throughout the period. Friday will mark the end of an Easterly flow and we’ll have gentle West winds into next week.

– – Friday and Saturday Dr. Jacks thermal updraft forecast indicates lift to 500 FPM at the field.

Height of lift forecast is good on Friday and much better on Saturday with the return of the westerlies. Looks like 14,000 feet over our third ridge might be attainable. …See you up there.
