SOARING FORECAST FEBRUARY 1-4, 2013

THIS WEEK Sunny, clear skies throughout the forecast period. We will have spring-like conditions with calm to gentle wind out of the Northeast. Last week it was very cool but the temperature differential aloft made for some workable thermal conditions. This week we should see early season thermals develop -likely near the field and over our second ridge. We are now only weeks away from spring thermals. Get ready.

SOARING FORECAST JANUARY 18-21, 2013

LAST WEEK I took an early launch and flew a slow searching glide inevitably back to the field without finding any lift. I should have waited till about 1:00. Pilots Baum, Brown and a few others found good thermals for several hour flights. They reported that is was brutally cold aloft. REMEMBER (note to self) it is the LAPSE RATE that is the important indicator of potential for lift -temperature differential between air parcels determines thermal strength prospects. I had made the assumption due to the very cold conditions that there would be no opportunities for lift. All it takes for thermals to happen is a bit of air to warm above the lapse rate for -lift!

THIS WEEK The jetstream powered trough that parked over So Cal has moved east. Temperatures will be 20+ degrees higher this week than last making for a nice warm up.
High pressure system has moved into our area from the east. That means wind component will spin in from the Northeast throughout this period. Look for thermal and ridge soaring conditions on our local mountains.

The National Weather Service is predicting the following local surface conditions for Friday through Monday:

FRIDAY:

Wind: Northeast 15 mph. Gusty.

SATURDAY:
Sunny, Temperature: 62 degrees
Wind: Northeast 5 to 10 mph.

SUNDAY
Sunny, Temperature: 63 degrees
Wind: Northeast 10 mph.

MONDAY:
Sunny, Temperature: 64 degrees
Wind: Northeast 10 mph.

SOARING FORECAST JANUARY 11-14, 2012

A big swoop of arctic air mass will be pushed across our area by a jetstream powered trough. This unusually low long sweep southward of the jetstream will keep this arctic airmass in place for the weekend. Since this weather cycle is jetstream influenced and not frontal, we will not have any wave associated with a frontal passage. Winds will be mostly Northwest and Northerly. Wind speed on the ground should be very moderate and will not affect our field usage. The passes and canyon areas near Los Angeles on the other hand will have massive winds up to 60+ mph or so.

Look for ridge soaring conditions and bow wave occurring Saturday onwards. A warm up will happen this coming week as high pressure replaces the trough.

The National Weather Service is predicting the following local surface conditions for Friday through Monday:

FRIDAY:
Sunny, Temperature: 40 degrees
Wind: Northwest 10 mph.

SATURDAY:
Sunny, Temperature: 43 degrees
Wind: North 15 mph.

SUNDAY
Sunny, Temperature: 40 degrees
Wind: Northeast 10 mph.

MONDAY:
Sunny, Temperature: 43 degrees
Wind: Northeast 10 mph.
