SOARING FORECAST SEPTEMBER 20-23, 2013

THIS WEEK

Weather will be seasonally cool for this time of year while still being quite warm in our area near the 90’s so good soaring is still on tap. Sunny and clear skies though the period. This weekend will be influenced by passing low pressure system. Expect the southerly wind across the local San Gabriel mountain range to create small local wave conditions both Friday and Saturday. Great lift potential all weekend with updraft velocity near 600 FPM to heights above 10,000 feet. The coastal areas will likely be under heavy marine overcast (or drizzle) all week. Come on out and enjoy our sunny skies!

SOARING FORECAST SEPTEMBER 6-9, 2013

THIS WEEK

Great lift and excellent soaring forecast. Forecast will remain unchanged through this period. Lift of up to 600 FPM to heights above 14,000 feet. Light winds out of the Southwest. The south wind will create localized wave-like conditions at our mountain range Friday and Saturday. Almost no chance of any T-storms locally but extensive over-development to our East and North each day as the last of the monsoonal moisture makes for some exceptional cloud formations. This will be the last of the hot and moist weather cycle. A low moves in early next week bringing drier air and cooler temps.

SOARING FORECAST AUGUST 30 TO SEPTEMBER 2, 2013

THIS WEEK

Great lift and excellent soaring forecast through the holiday. The monsoonal moisture will be persistent throughout the period. I would classify this weekend as very good lift to good heights but likely unsettled and bumpy in the afternoons while still being excellent soaring conditions. Shearlines will develop each day with Sunday likely having more pronounced lines of convergence/lift. Not much change across our weekend. Each day we’ll see about the same conditions and temperatures and winds of about 10 knots or so out of the Southwest. Sunday will be a bit drier and a few degrees cooler as a system pushes out the monsoonal airmass. Perfect!

Ignore the local weather forecasters predicting T-Storms in our area. It rarely happens. There is a slight chance we will have a downpour but historically these events occur far to our east and to the Northwest. The skies will put on a show with massive Anvil shaped CuNim’s to the east rising over 30,000 feet each day as the tropical moisture cooks off in Vegas and Palm Springs areas. If we do get some overdevelopment in our area, keep alert and make sure you are back on the ground and tied down long before the storm threatens the field and you are forced to land at an alternate (Nichols, Brian Ranch etc.). When we do get the rare downpour it is usually accompanied by very strong downdrafts.

SOARING FORECAST AUGUST 23-26, 2013

THIS WEEK

Hot and sunny throughout the period. Excellent thermal lift is forecast. The remnants of a tropical storm off the Baja coast will push moist air into our area Sunday and Monday with a chance of some overdevelopment occurring. There will be the chance each day for soaring in small wave-like conditions as the consistent south winds push in over our San Gabriel mountains.
